Compost Sites

Anoka County has two compost sites that accept grass, leaves, non-woody yard waste, tree waste, and organics (food scraps).

Tree waste is charged based on volume, so bundling is encouraged for a lower fee.

What to know before you go

  • Please arrive 15 minutes before close. 
  • Check in at the attendant station before dropping off any material.
  • Provide your driver's license or other proof of residence at check-in.
  • Unload your yard waste.
  • Take all bags/containers/tarps with you.
  • Ensure any yard waste or food scraps you bring to the site is free of garbage, recyclables, or plastic.
  • Tree waste may be loose or bundled. Remove bundling materials such as rope and twine and bring it home. 
  • Tree waste is charged based on volume, so bundling is encouraged for a lower fee.
  • No tree waste hauled by a tree service company in a trailer or truck longer than 12' will be accepted at the compost sites at this time. Tree service companies hired by county residents, please contact the compost site contractor at (763) 862-0016 with questions.

Materials Available at Compost Sites

Unscreened Compost

Unscreened compost is free to Anoka County residents, when available. You must load the unscreened compost yourself. Be sure to bring your own containers and shovel.

Materials for Purchase

Contact the site operator, OTI, Inc., directly for pricing and availability. Mulch and screened compost can be purchased on a first-come, first-served basis (non-commercial use only), April through November only. For safety reasons, residents are not allowed to load any purchased materials. Contact the site operator for assistance.

Fees:

  • Fees listed below are for Anoka County residents only. Proof of residence is required. 
  • Both compost sites accept cash, credit, and debit payments.
  • For ease of payment, keep materials separated by category as they are listed on the price sheet. This will also save you time at the compost site because many categories need to be placed in separate piles due to differing processing needs. Co-mingled loads may be accepted but will be charged an additional fee.
  • Tree waste is charged based on volume, so bundling is encouraged for a lower fee.

Additional Information

State law prohibits putting tree and yard waste in your garbage, (Minnesota Statutes § 115A.931). “Yard waste” includes garden waste, leaves, lawn cuttings, weeds, small shrub, and tree trimmings.
