If your driver's license is expired or expiring soon, you can renew your Minnesota Driver's License in person at any of our five Anoka County License Centers.

If your Minnesota driver’s license has been expired for more than one year from the expiration date, you will be required to retake the knowledge test at a DVS exam office. Here you can find exam office locations and select knowledge test from the transaction type drop down.

When Can I Renew my Driver’s License?

Driver and Vehicle Services will mail a postcard reminder approximately 45 days before your Driver’s License expires. You are required to renew your License by your birthday every four years.

How to Renew Your Driver’s License

  • Complete an application that is available online or in the lobby of each License Center
  • Present current Driver’s License for invalidation
  • Pay applicable renewal fee
  • Vision is screened for driver’s license applicants
  • Picture and signature is captured
  • Receive temporary License papers while the new card is mailed to you.

What to Bring for License Renewal

  • Current Minnesota driver’s license
  • Social Security number (SSN)
  • Acceptable Payment

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

In addition to the above information, Minnesota DVS is requiring that all commercial drivers will also need to fill out and complete a Medical Self Certification Form (PDF), and provide a current DOT medical card if the driver is required to carry one by their company.

Turning 21?

The State of Minnesota recommends that any person renewing their license for their 21st birthday not do so until at most three weeks before their birthday. The State will not send a driver’s license out until your 21st birthday and renewing too far in advance could result in your temporary license expiring before your new Driver’s License arrives.

Renewal Cost

The renewal fee is dependent on class of license and endorsements. Please see this Fee Chart for a complete list of fees.
